Impact Windows

Double Hung Impact Windows

Double hung impact windows have two operable sashes, so you can open the top, the bottom or both. Storm Pro Window and Door custom sizes and installs double hung impact windows with laminated glass across Tampa Bay and Southwest Florida, using our own in-house crews.

How Do Double Hung Impact Windows Work?

Both sashes slide up and down in the frame. Lower the top sash to let warm air escape near the ceiling, raise the bottom sash for a breeze, or open both for airflow through the whole room.

Like every impact window we install, the glass is laminated: two layers bonded to a tough interlayer that holds the glass in place if it is struck. Frame, glass and anchors are installed to the product approval, so the whole unit works together under hurricane pressure.

Why Choose Double Hung?

Flexible ventilation

Open the top, the bottom or both sashes to move air the way you want.

Easy cleaning

Many double hung sashes tilt in, so you can clean the outside glass from inside the house.

Classic look

A traditional style that suits older Florida homes and pairs well with grids.

Hurricane protection

Laminated impact glass protects the opening year round, with no shutters to put up.

Single Hung or Double Hung?

A single hung impact window has a fixed top sash and a moving bottom sash, and it often costs less. Double hung gives you two moving sashes and easier cleaning on upper floors. We help you choose room by room based on how you use each opening.

Options

Frames, Glass and Grids

Double hung impact windows are available in vinyl or aluminum frames, with Low-E coatings, argon fill, and grid options including classic applied, between-the-glass and double applied. See energy efficient impact windows for glass options, or compare styles in person at our showrooms.

Ventilation and egress

Ventilation and Bedroom Egress

A double hung lets you open the bottom sash, the top sash or both. Opening both a few inches lets cooler air in low and warm air out high, which works well in Florida bedrooms and kitchens.

The Florida Building Code requires sleeping rooms to have an emergency escape opening that meets minimum clear-opening area, height, width, and sill height. Each sash opens to about half the window’s height, so a tall double hung often works. A wide, short opening may be better served by a horizontal slider or casement. We check every bedroom opening during measurement, and the permit confirms the requirement. See our permits and building code page.

Installation

How Does Storm Pro Install Double Hung Impact Windows?

Each window is ordered to your measured opening and set to the design pressure that opening requires. Our in-house crew removes the old unit, inspects the framing, and anchors the new window per its product approval. We will never install into rotted or structurally unsound framing.

We secure the permit, protect your floors, recycle old units when possible, and clean up before we leave. See our impact window installation process.

What Pairs Well With Double Hung Windows?

Double hungs are a classic match for a large picture window: a fixed center for the view, with double hungs on each side for airflow you can control at the top and bottom. On a front elevation, a half round from our architectural impact windows line above a double hung adds height and curb appeal.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually a little, because both sashes move. Your quote depends on size, frame, glass and the design pressure each opening needs.

Approved impact windows count as opening protection. The credit usually requires every glazed opening to be protected and documented.

Often, yes, depending on association rules. See our condo and HOA guide.

Often, yes. A tall double hung can meet Florida’s bedroom emergency escape requirements because the bottom sash opens to about half the window’s height. We check the clear-opening size of every bedroom window during measurement.

Many double hung models have tilt-in sashes. Unlock the sash, tilt it toward you, and clean the outside glass from inside with a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. Keep the sill track and weep holes clear so rainwater drains.
