Impact Door Installation, Step by Step
Impact door installation at Storm Pro Window and Door follows a clear sequence: consultation and measurement, permit, delivery, removal of the old door, installation and sealing, cleanup and final inspection. Our in-house installers finish most doors in one day, and we will never install a new door into a rotted or structurally unsound frame.
Why does impact door installation matter as much as the door?
An impact door is approved as a tested system, and it only performs as designed when it is installed to the manufacturer’s instructions and its product approval. Anchoring, shimming, sealing and flashing all affect how the door handles wind pressure and water. That is why Storm Pro uses in-house installers, never subcontractors, and backs every job with a lifetime workmanship warranty. See our warranty.

What are the steps in an impact door installation?
Free consultation and measurement
We measure each opening, check the frame and review styles, glass and finishes. You get a written quote.
Product ordering
Once you approve, we order doors built to your measurements and selections.
Permit
Replacing exterior doors requires a building permit in Florida. We secure it and use products with a Florida Product Approval or other accepted approval.
Prep and protection
On install day, the crew lays drop cloths and sets up a safe work area.
Remove the old door
We take out the existing door and frame and recycle materials when possible.
Inspect the opening
If we find rot or structural damage, we stop and talk with you. We never install into a rotted or unsound frame.
Install, anchor and seal
We set, level and anchor the door per its approval, then seal and weatherproof the perimeter and sill.
Test and adjust
We check swing or slide, locks, weatherstripping and reveals.
Cleanup and walkthrough
We clean up and show you how to operate and care for the door.
Final inspection
The building department completes its final inspection on the permit.
How long does impact door installation take?
Most door installations are done in one day. Multiple doors, double doors with sidelites, large multi-panel sliders or frame repair can take longer. We give you a realistic schedule before work begins.
Do I need a permit to replace a door in Florida?
Yes. Replacing windows and exterior doors requires a building permit in Florida jurisdictions, and every impact door installation we do is permitted. The permit confirms that the product is approved for your home’s wind requirements and that the work is inspected. Storm Pro handles it for you. Anyone can check a product approval number in the Florida Building Commission product approval database. Read more about permits and building code and Florida Product Approval.

How should I prepare?
Clear furniture, rugs and decor from about six feet around each door inside and out. Take down wall hangings near the opening. Tell us about alarm sensors on the door so you can coordinate with your security provider.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you use subcontractors to install doors?
No. Storm Pro handles every impact door installation with in-house installers only. Our own team measures, installs and cleans up, and we back the work with a lifetime workmanship warranty.
What happens if my door frame is rotted?
We will not install a new door into a rotted or structurally unsound frame, because it would compromise performance and the approval. If we find damage, we explain what we found and the options before continuing.
Who pulls the permit?
Storm Pro secures the building permit for you as part of the project. The permit ensures the product and installation meet Florida Building Code requirements for your home.
What do you do with my old door?
We remove the old door and frame and haul them away, recycling materials when possible. You do not need to arrange disposal.
Do I need to be home during installation?
Someone should be home at the start to confirm the plan and at the end for the walkthrough. Tell us your schedule and we will coordinate.
